1HOUSE RESOLUTION

2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 

3Representatives wish to congratulate the Illinois Nature 

4Preserves Commission and Northern Illinois University on the 

5occasion of the 60th anniversary of the dedication of Pine 

6Rock Nature Preserve; and

7 WHEREAS, The Illinois Natural Areas Preservation Act 

8created a system for preserving and protecting areas of the 

9State as a part of the heritage of the people of Illinois; and

10 WHEREAS, Illinois Nature Preserves are of value for 

11scientific research, for teaching, as reservoirs of natural 

12materials with potential uses yet to be discovered, as 

13habitats for rare and vanishing species, as places of historic 

14and natural interest and scenic beauty, and as living museums 

15of the native landscape wherein one may envision and 

16experience primeval conditions in a wilderness-like 

17environment; and

18 WHEREAS, Illinois Nature Preserves contribute generally to 

19the public health, the welfare, and the environmental quality 

20of the State; and

21 WHEREAS, Pine Rock Nature Preserve, located in Ogle

1County, was officially established in 1966 to protect and 

2conserve its dry upland black oak forest and savanna, mesic 

3and wet-mesic prairie, and the St. Peter sandstone geological 

4formation; and

5 WHEREAS, Pine Rock Nature Preserve provides critical 

6habitat for a diverse array of plant and animal species, 

7including big bluestem grass and various sedges; and

8 WHEREAS, Pine Rock Nature Preserve offers opportunities 

9for hiking, nature observation, birdwatching, and 

10environmental education, allowing residents and visitors to 

11experience the
