1SENATE RESOLUTION

2 WHEREAS, The Battle of Midway is widely considered one of 

3the most significant naval battles in the Pacific Theater of 

4World War II, taking place from June 4, 1942 to June 7, 1942, 

5only six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor; Midway 

6Island is located in the Pacific Ocean almost directly between 

7the United States and Japan, making it a key target in the war; 

8and

9 WHEREAS, The U.S. Navy's victory in the battle, and 

10subsequent defense of the major base on Midway Island, 

11effectively turned the tides of World War II in the Pacific; as 

12a result of the U.S. victory, Japan abandoned its plan to 

13expand its reach in the Pacific and remained on the defensive 

14for the remainder of World War II; and

15 WHEREAS, In 1949, the Chicago Municipal Airport was 

16renamed Midway in honor of the hard fought Battle of Midway; 

17and

18 WHEREAS, June 2025 marks the 83rd anniversary of the 

19Battle of Midway; therefore, be it

20 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL 

21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare June 7, 2025 

SR0011- 2 -LRB104 07633 MST 17677 r

1as Battle of Midway Day in the State of Illinois to honor those 

2who served.
