Senate Resolution No. 66

BY: Senator WALCZYK

COMMEMORATING the 195th Anniversary of the Town of
 West Turin, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 195th Anniversary of the Town of West Turin, New York;
and

WHEREAS, The Town of West Turin was formed from part of Turin on
March 25, 1830, and was subsequently reduced in size by the formation of
newer towns: Montague (1850) and Osceola (1844); and

WHEREAS, Located in what is now Lewis County, settlement of West
Turin began as early as 1796 with Mr. John Ives and his family; and

WHEREAS, The Town of West Turin was known as a center of trade
during the 1880s, but soon declined due to main highways and railroads
bypassing it; farming is still big in the community, but is more
consolidated with larger farms; and

WHEREAS, The Town of West Turin is home to Constable Hall, which
inspired "Twas the Night Before Christmas," and Gould Paper Company,
which began in 1892; and

WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Town of West Turin continues
to provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and

WHEREAS, Today, the residents of the Town of West Turin have a
bright outlook for the future of their community, which remains a
beautiful place in which to live and raise a family; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of the Town of West Turin rich history and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud to pay tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of its
195th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 195th Anniversary of the Town of West Turin, recognizing
the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the
community of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Town of West Turin.
