Assembly Resolution No. 419

BY: M. of A. Lavine

COMMEMORATING May 2025 as the 141st Anniversary of
the groundbreaking of the construction of Sagamore
Hill in Oyster Bay, New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to landmarks of historical significance that contribute to
the rich cultural and political heritage of the State of New York and
the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate May 2025 as the 141st Anniversary of the groundbreaking of
the construction of Sagamore Hill, the historic home of President
Theodore Roosevelt, located in Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New York; and

WHEREAS, In May 1884, following the purchase of 155 acres of land in
Cove Neck, Theodore Roosevelt began construction on what would become
Sagamore Hill, ultimately completing the house in 1885 and making it his
permanent residence; and

WHEREAS, Sagamore Hill would go on to serve not only as Theodore
Roosevelt's family home but also as a center of political and diplomatic
activity, especially during his presidency from 1901 to 1909, when it
was affectionately known as the "Summer White House"; and

WHEREAS, As the home of one of the most consequential figures in
American history--statesman, conservationist, Nobel Peace Prize
laureate, and the 26th President of the United States-Sagamore Hill
stands today as a tangible symbol of Theodore Roosevelt's legacy and
character; and

WHEREAS, The beginning of Sagamore Hill's construction in May 1884
marked the first step in the creation of a residence that would host
world leaders, serve as a site of significant political discourse, and
become a cornerstone of American heritage; and

WHEREAS, Today, Sagamore Hill is preserved as a National Historic
Site under the stewardship of the National Park Service, and it
continues to educate and inspire visitors from across the Nation and
around the world; and

WHEREAS, The 141st Anniversary of the groundbreaking of the
construction of Sagamore Hill offers an important opportunity to reflect
on our shared history and recommit to the preservation of sites that
honor the ideals and achievements of our Nation's past; now, therefore,
be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate May 2025 as the 141st Anniversary of the groundbreaking of
the construction of Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, New York, and to honor
the vision and enduring legacy of President Theodore Roosevelt; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the National Park Service at Sagamore Hill National
