Assembly Resolution No. 12

BY: M. of A. Epstein

MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
January 15, 2025, as Bagel Day in the State of New
 York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
official days that are set aside to celebrate the spirit of New York;
and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim January 15, 2025 as Bagel
Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the observance of
National Bagel Day; and

WHEREAS, National Bagel Day is an annual celebration commemorating
the delectable doughnut-shaped yeast-leavened roll that is characterized
by a crisp, shiny crust and a dense interior celebrated across the
country; and

WHEREAS, The bagel was brought to the United States largely by the
growing Eastern European and Jewish-immigrant communities in New York
City in the early 1900s; and

WHEREAS, The bagel grew in popularity in Manhattan's Lower East Side
in neighborhoods populated by Jewish immigrants from Poland, where it
became a staple starting in the 1600s; and

WHEREAS, An entire union was created in the early 1900s called Bagel
Bakers Local 338 to support the growing, immigrant-led industry; and

WHEREAS, The hundreds of bagel shops in New York have a long history
of being immigrant-owned small businesses that contribute to New York's
vibrant and distinctive local culinary scene; and

WHEREAS, Bagel Day is an opportunity to reflect on the immigrant
roots of our great state, support small businesses, and enjoy this
delicious cuisine; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim January 15, 2025, as Bagel
Day in the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York.
