A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending Wilhelmenia Atkinson-Dean; and for other purposes.1
WHEREAS, Wilhelmenia Atkinson-Dean has a long and consistent record of service to the2
community and to this state and has been recognized as one of the most dynamic and3
committed educators in Georgia; and4
WHEREAS, this outstanding educator has had a tremendous impact on her community5
through her spirit of service and desire to improve the quality of life in the Savannah,6
Georgia area; and7
WHEREAS, this remarkable educator has established a glowing reputation of renown8
throughout Georgia for her dedication and high ideals; and9
WHEREAS, born in Sumter, South Carolina, Mrs. Dean earned her bachelor's degree from10
Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, and she earned her master's degrees from11
Columbia University in New York and Georgia Southern University; and12

WHEREAS, during her 34 years with the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System,13
Mrs. Dean dedicated her skills and abilities to the teaching of social studies, and she enjoyed14
teaching U.S. history and government the most; and15
WHEREAS, Mrs. Dean held leadership positions such as the chair of the department of16
social studies for six years, chair of the Beach High School faculty for five years,17
co-organizer and instructor of the federally funded Upward Bound Program for18
college-bound students at Savannah State University, and more; and19
WHEREAS, her extensive involvement in civic activities includes serving as a member of20
the board of managers for Hodge Memorial Daycare Center, organizing the youth awards and21
scholarship programs for outstanding African American high school students for the22
Savannah chapter of The Links Incorporated, and she coordinated the chapter's health23
project; and24
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this25
extraordinary citizen be appropriately recognized.26
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that27
the members of this body recognize and commend Wilhelmenia Atkinson-Dean for her28
dedication to education and to the community and extend best wishes for her future success29
and happiness.30
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized31
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to32
Wilhelmenia Atkinson-Dean.33
