WHEREAS, Veterans Day, November 11th, is a day dedicated to honor
those who served in the United States military for their service,
sacrifice, and contributions to our county; and

WHEREAS, November 11th is an important date in history because in
1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice
was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then
known as "the Great War"; and

WHEREAS, Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the
following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United
States in 1938; in the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War,
Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day; and

WHERAS In November 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed
November 11th as the first commemoration of Armistice Day to remember
all lives lost in the war and the heroism of those who served; and

WHEREAS, On November 11, 1921, an unidentified American soldier
killed in the war was buried at Arlington National Cemetery; on the same
day the previous year, unidentified soldiers were laid to rest at
Westminster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris; and

WHEREAS, In May of 1938, November 11th was made a legal holiday
through an act of Congress, and was dedicated to the cause of peace and
honoring veterans who served in World War I; and

WHEREAS, In December of 1941, the United States entered into World
War II, and in 1950, the Korean War; in 1954, after the return of
service personnel from both World War II and the Korean War, President
Eisenhower signed a bill rededicating and renaming November 11th from
Armistice Day to Veterans Day; November 11th became a day for Americans
to honor veterans who served in all wars and commit themselves to the
cause of peace; and

WHEREAS Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate
the veterans of World War I and II on or near November 11th; Canada has
Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday
of November); in Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it
is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November
11th; and

WHEREAS, In the United States, an official wreath-laying ceremony is
held each Veterans Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington
National Cemetery, while parades and other celebrations are held in
states around the country; and

and wars in which the United States was involved in from the past up
until today; this includes but not limited to the Revolutionary War,

Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, and
the Global War on Terrorism; and

WHEREAS, The State of New York wishes to honor the men and women who
have served in the United States military; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
