A senate RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS PROFOUND SORROW UPON THE PASSING OF Reverend
Kenneth F. Hodges AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY
FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of
the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Reverend
Kenneth F. Hodges on April 22, 2025, at the age of seventy-three; and

Whereas, a native of Bennetts
Point, Reverend Hodges was born on February 11, 1952, to parents Benjamin F.
Hodges and Lydia Whaley Hodges; and

Whereas, Reverend
Hodges earned his Bachelor of Arts from Clark College in 1977 and his Master of
Divinity from the Morehouse School of Religion of Interdenominational
Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia; and

Whereas, Reverend
Hodges married Patricia Few Hodges on August 7, 1982, and together they had
three children, Kendrea, Kenyatta, and Kenithea; and

Whereas, Reverend
Hodges was the pastor of Beaufort's Tabernacle Baptist Church in the center of
downtown Charleston. He led the church for nearly thirty years and was as much
a staple of the community at the church itself; and

Whereas, the legendary
Tabernacle Baptist Church is a historic landmark where enslaved people went to
worship in the mid-1800s. Reverend Hodges was instrumental to preserving the
history of the church, which included his efforts to memorialize the church's
ties to Harriet Tubman and Robert Smalls; and

Whereas, one of
Reverend Hodges' proudest accomplishments in his efforts to preserve Beaufort
history was the monument erected in honor of Harriet Tubman. The sculpture, by artist
Ed Dwight, depicts Harriet Tubman's leading of a faction during the historic Combahee
River Raid; and

Whereas, a civic
leader, Reverend Hodges was a former member of the House of Representatives,
where he represented House District 121 and where he was known for his
dedication to his constituents and his ability to work across the aisle in
order to best serve the people and the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, in addition to
his legislative work, Reverend Hodges was involved in his community through his
leadership as the Bennettsville Housing Authority Commissioner and Chairman;
his membership in a ministerial delegation to London, Kenya, Uganda, and South
Africa; his involvement in the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance; his
work as faculty on the South Carolina Baptist Congress of Christian Education;
his membership on the executive board of the Baptist Educational and Missionary
Convention of South Carolina; his membership on the board of directors of the Beaufort
Area Boys and Girls Club; and much more; and

Whereas, Reverend
Hodges leaves to cherish his memory his family, his many friends, and the
community that he so lovingly served. He will be greatly missed. Now,
therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express profound
sorrow upon the passing of Reverend Kenneth F. Hodges and extend the deepest
sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this
resolution be presented to the family of Reverend Kenneth F. Hodges.
