Assembly Resolution No. 131

BY: M. of A. Manktelow

COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
Savannah, New York, on February 28, 2025

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Savannah in Wayne
County, New York, on February 28, 2025; and

WHEREAS, The history of the land where the Town of Savannah is
located is rich in historic artifacts, spanning well beyond 200 years
ago to centuries more of permanent and seasonal communities by Native
American peoples, including the Cayuga and Owasco people; and

WHEREAS, The Town was formed from the City of Galen; from a rugged
landscape, the people of Savannah transformed the land into flourishing
farmland and have been historically known as top producers of potatoes,
onions, and sugar beets for some time; Savannah farms continue to
provide fresh, high-quality produce to the local community and beyond;
and

WHEREAS, Savannah is also known as a significant destination for its
trails through beautiful wetlands, abundant wildlife, and diverse
recreation; it is part of the Erie Canalway Trail, Montezuma Wetlands
Complex, and a globally significant Important Bird Area; and

WHEREAS, With a community that actively values and is committed to
service and community development, whether it is creating community
fields, ensuring the Erie Canalway Trail did not bypass Savannah,
putting on festivals, hosting community dinners, serving as first
responders, protecting wildlife and domesticated animals, providing
places of worship and food to residents in need, Savannah is poised to
continue its growth and success for centuries to come; and

WHEREAS, Savannah is home to local businesses, both old and new,
that actively serve the community by providing jobs, needed goods and
services, as well as being generous in consistently giving to community
needs and initiatives; and

WHEREAS, Savannah is fortunate to have both long-standing local
businesses that have served with excellence and adapted to the needs of
the community over the decades, as well as new and innovative small
businesses and home-based businesses that continue to enrich and extend
the offerings available to Savannah residents; and

WHEREAS, Savannah residents, business owners, local organizations,
and town officials and staff look forward to building on this storied
and important history, working together to build a thriving town into
the next century; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Town of Savannah continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional, and educational climate, as well as providing
all essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Savannah, recognizing
the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the
community of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Town of Savannah, New York.
