Senate Resolution No. 1856

BY: Senator HARCKHAM

 COMMEMORATING the Centennial Anniversary of
 Hendrick Hudson High School

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those enduring institutions which, through their commitment to
education and community, have profoundly contributed to the development
and vitality of the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the Centennial Anniversary of Hendrick Hudson High School,
to be celebrated with a myriad of events throughout Spring 2026,
including a Time Capsule Reveal and Dedication, as well as a Centennial
Gala on May 30, 2026, in Ossining, New York; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 1926, Hendrick Hudson High School has stood as a
beacon of learning, achievement, and community pride for 100 years,
fostering generations of students under the enduring spirit of "Sailor
Pride"; and

WHEREAS, The year 1926 marked a pivotal chapter in the history of
the Hendrick Hudson school community, as the high school was officially
designated Hendrick Hudson High School and plans for its dedicated
building were set into motion; and

WHEREAS, This milestone was the culmination of forward-thinking
efforts which began in 1925, when, on March 31, district voters approved
the purchase of the Shedd property on Albany Post Road for $24,000,
laying the foundation for a new era in public education; and

WHEREAS, On October 31, 1925, architects Knappe and Morris of New
York City completed plans for the new high school building, with an
estimated cost not to exceed $326,000, reflecting both ambition and
careful stewardship of public resources; and

WHEREAS, The community overwhelmingly endorsed the Board of
Education's plan to construct the new school on December 3, 1925,
demonstrating a shared commitment to educational excellence and
opportunity; and

WHEREAS, On May 13, 1926, voters approved the renaming of the
district to Central School District No. 3, establishing the district's
modern boundaries and enabling access to vital state funding to support
construction; and

WHEREAS, The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Hendrick Hudson
High School was held on May 27, 1926 in Montrose, marking a moment of
unity and optimism, as members of the Board of Education and community
leaders ceremonially turned the first shovelful of earth; and

WHEREAS, Among those present at this historic event were contractor
Louis Kiel; supervising principal Frank G. Lindsey; Board of Education
President Thomas Cole, who laid the cornerstone; and Board members David

O. Henion, James Chase, James Herbert Ferris, and George Welsch, whose
leadership helped bring this vision to fruition; and

WHEREAS, These efforts culminated in the completion of the new high
school building in 1928, providing a permanent home for academic
excellence and community engagement; and

WHEREAS, Over the past century, Hendrick Hudson High School has
distinguished itself through its unwavering dedication to educating
young people, cultivating civic responsibility, and nurturing a strong
sense of identity and pride among its students and alumni; and

WHEREAS, The Centennial Anniversary of Hendrick Hudson High School
provides an opportunity to reflect upon its rich history, honor its many
contributions, and celebrate its continued role in shaping future
generations; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Centennial Anniversary of Hendrick Hudson High School,
recognizing 100 years of learning, legacy, and Sailor Pride; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
