Senate Resolution No. 59

BY: Senator WALCZYK

COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the Village
 of Speculator, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Speculator in
Hamilton County, New York; and

WHEREAS, The area which the Village of Speculator currently occupies
is believed to have once been hunting and fishing grounds for Algonquin
and Mohawk tribes in the pre-colonial era; and

WHEREAS, In 1864, Joel Newton built a small store and hotel in the
center of town and secured a post office with the name "Newton's
Corners"; shortly after, in 1896, the name was changed to Speculator,
derived from a mountain which one could see across Lake Pleasant; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Speculator began to blossom, igniting a
booming tourist industry, which fostered the development of better
facilities and infrastructure, and as a result, a government was formed
soon thereafter; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Speculator was officially formed in 1925
when it was approved by voters; and

WHEREAS, Speculator became home to many cottages and hunting
shanties during the Victorian age of tourism, along with other camps;
the village is known colloquially as "All Season Vacationland" for the
number of activities to do throughout all four seasons; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Speculator is surrounded by and renowned for
its natural beauty, with Speculator Mountain to the south and Lake
Pleasant and Sacandaga Lake to the west; the village even features a
unique geographic exclave to the north of its main territory; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Village of Speculator continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional, and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Speculator, New
York, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in
the life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Village of Speculator.
