Senate Resolution No. 65

BY: Senator WALCZYK

COMMEMORATING the 135th Anniversary of the Village
 of Middleville, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 135th Anniversary of the Village of Middleville in
Herkimer County, New York; and

WHEREAS, The area which hosts the modern-day Village of Middleville
was first settled in 1806, due to the demand for waterpower; and

WHEREAS, A local named Sheffield Kenyon purchased this land and soon
after, two public houses and blacksmiths were established; and

WHEREAS, By 1814, the community had a mill, the Herkimer
Manufacturing Company erected a large stone building for manufacturing
wool, cotton, flax, and iron products, and resident John Wood had a
tannery; and

WHEREAS, Railroad service was obtained in 1880, and due to
increasing demands, the village was incorporated in 1890, with water and
main lines were established shortly thereafter; and

WHEREAS, As a result of the railroad, developing infrastructure, and
proximity to Utica and the Adirondack mountains, Middleville quickly
became a vibrant community with an active fire department, library, and
churches; and

WHEREAS, Packed full of history, Middleville is home to two places
on the National Register of Historic Places: Lalino Stone Arch Bridge
and the Route 29 Stone Arch Bridge; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Village of Middleville continues its commitment
to enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional, and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 135th Anniversary of the Village of Middleville,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Village of Middleville.
